Description of Hamsters

The Golden hamster (commonly known as the Syrian hamster in singapore)

Size: up to 18cm in length

Lifespan: up to 4 years but on average 2

Syrian hamsters are generally peaceful hamsters(towards humans) with superb intelligence. depending on coat colour, most singular or dual coloured syrian hamsters tend to be friendlier to humans where as checkered or those with 3 or more different colours tend to be more hostile. Males are generally less defensive toward both humans and other hamsters as compared to their female counterparts. However, Syrians should be kept in solitary once they reach approximately 8 weeks of age. My Syrians are able to distinguish between food and hand by cautiously taking food that are hand fed to them.

The Djungarian Hamster (Commonly known as the Winter White Hamster)

Size: up to 10cm

Life Span: Average 2 years

The easiest to tame of all the dwarf hamsters, the Winter White hamster has increased in popularitiy in singapore over the past few years. Its common nickname, the winter white was derived from its ability to change the colour of its coat to white during winter or when daylight hours shortened and the temperature lowered below room temperature.

Campbell's Hamster

Size: up to 10cm

Lifespan: Average 2 years

The naturally coloured Russian Campbell Hamster is simillar in its appearance with its winter white relatives, however, the two have so far been concluded by the scientific community to be seperate species. At a closer look, the campbell's hamster would appear to have a shorter and sharper face shape and the colours between its belly and top fur contrasts with a clear border where as the colours tend to blend across in the winter whites. Campbell hamsters also tend to be less friendly toward humans but are easily tamable with patience and consistency.

Roborovskii's hamster

Size: up to 5cm

Lifespan: Averagely 3 years

The hardest and most difficult to tame, the Roboroskii hamsters are the smallest, most agile and impish of the dwarf hamsters. They generally live well in groups and naturally avoid human hand contact unless they have been well conditioned to it and hand tamed.

The Pudding Hamster

Size: Similar to the winter white

Lifespan: Most say it is averagely 2 years

The highly controversial pudding hamster is rising in popularity here in singapore for its bright and unique colours. Most petshop owners claim that they dominantly belong to the winter white species. However, other speculations suggests that they are more hybrid between the winter white and campbell hamsters due to the fact that winter whites and campbells are able to crossbreed and that most of its offspring tend to be infertile or have difficulty with producing healthy offspirngs. I decided to get a pair for myself to observe and find out more about their characteristics and behavioral patterns first hand.

The Chinese Hamster

Size: up to 13 cm

Lifespan: Averagely 2 and a half years

I have yet to see a chinese hamster for myself here in singapore. Sources from books and on the internet describes them to be friendly towards humans but hostile towards one another.

Hamster Basics

I believe that for a hamster to be healthy, they would need a couple of basic items in their housing.

Size of housing:

As a general rule of thumb, I would put myself in the hamster's shoes (by imagining myself the same size as the hamster with 10 times my normal energy). If you can vividly do that, you would roughly have an idea of how much space the hamster would need. Minimumly 20cm in lengh and 15cm in breadth for 1 dwarf hamster and thereafter, an additional 5 cm in length and 3cm in breadth per housemate. Syrians should be housed individually and be given at least 30cm in length and 25cm in breadth of floor space.

Drink Bottle:

Any bottle will do, just make sure that water dispenses efficiently from the bottle and does not leak. Change the water daily if possible.

Wheel:

At least, 12 cm in diameter for young dwarfs and fully grown Robos

At least, 15cm in diameter for fully grown dwarfs.

At least, 17cm in diameter for grown syrians.

Personal Shelter or cave:

Made of wood, plastic, metal or ceramic

A toy/obstacle/tool:

For example, wooden swings, toilet rolls or castle houses.

Food bowl:

To maintain hygiene, though hamsters also choose a private location to store their collected food.
